“Completing teacher training via Shireland Collegiate Academy’s School Direct route has been a great way into the profession. You have the advantage of spending a large part of your time in school developing the practical skills needed for the role, whilst still benefitting from the wealth of knowledge and the academic perspective that the University of Warwick has to offer. In addition to this, there is the support from the Academy.
The workload is challenging at times, but the feeling that you get when a lesson goes really well or a child suddenly grasps a concept that they’ve been struggling with, makes it worthwhile. Plus, not only do you have the opportunity to share your experiences with other Shireland trainees, but there is also a dedicated mentor, external training sessions at outstanding primary schools and the Shireland Collegiate Academy Teaching School Directors, who are always more than happy to offer help and advice. This means you have access to an excellent support network to help you through your training year and to prepare you for the rest of your career beyond that.
I have now been offered an NQT position at my host primary school and when I complete the PGCE, this will give me credits towards a Masters qualifications, so all in all I think it is a brilliant route into teaching.”
